As I sit here and write this Freeport Fishing Report – I look back at the years past and think about how exciting it still feels to be a saltwater angler here on the Texas Gulf Coast. Yes, we catch some nice fish here in Galveston and Freeport in the winter months. Because honestly, our winters can be like a roller coaster for weather temperatures. We generally have extensive nice, mild weather windows to get out on the bays of Galveston & Freeport as well as the Gulf of America. But, there is just something about the coming of spring that energizes our somewhat cooled down fishing enthusiasm.

For decades, the Spring migration patterns of fish at Galveston Jetties, San Luis Pass and Freeport Jetties/Beachfront have been like the ancient migration of visitors to the Roman Coliseum for Gladiator events that holds large crowds, exciting fights, and the anticipation of the battle of a lifetime! As a Galveston and Freeport Fishing Guide, I have been blessed to witness many amazing spring battles that took place along the “Beachfront Coliseum”. 2025 Texas Gulf Coast Spring Fishing is now underway!

This past week has seen some nice catches along the beachfront on our Freeport Texas Fishing Charters. Giant Redfish, Pompano, Bay Snapper (Sheepshead), Black Drum, and some Speckled Trout mixed in as well. Water temperatures are rising, and as they continue we will especially see more Bay Snapper show up for their annual spawn. Giant Black Drum will also be doing their “deed” as their spawn is kicking off as well. Live shrimp freelined along the jetties is the key right now for the reds, bay snaps, specks and pomps. Fresh cracked blue crab is always the “go to” to trick a Giant Black Drum to play!

The back lakes and bays of Galveston and Freeport are heating up as well. In Chocolate Bay, Christmas Bay, Bastrop Bay and San Luis Pass we are targeting slot reds, speckled trout, flounder, puppy black drum and bay snaps. Mainly targeting oyster reefs, and being there when the tide is right is definitely the magic trick for success. These trips are my personal favorite, because not only is the fishing action packed – but the giant alligators sunning on the banks after a long winter is a grand site as we head down the bayous to the bays to fish. This time of year can be especially good to get in on the Texas spring time flounder run. Some days can be very good for loading up the flatties! Live shrimp fished under a popping cork over oyster reefs is a sure bet for reds, drum, specks, and baysnaps. While Carolina rigged live shrimp fished along the sand bars and guts along the passes are good for the flounder.

We are also venturing out onto the Gulf of America when the weather windows allow and getting some nice wahoos, snapper, tuna and more. We will be running more and more Freeport Texas Deep Sea Fishing Trips as spring time moves along.

Spring has sprung and our Freeport Family Friendly Fishing Guides are ready to show your family a great time on our bays. We encourage getting those kids out on the water, and have the patience, experience and knowledge to show you and your family what Texas Coastal Fishing is all about! Give us a call today to ask questions, get a report and book a Galveston or Freeport Fishing Trip with the best!
